Women's Club
The Garrett Park Women’s Club welcomes all Garrett Park women who wish to
take an active role in support of Town social events and to enhance and
celebrate our connections as women in the community. Members meet the second Thursday
of every month, typically at a member’s home, from 7:30 until 9 p.m. AT each
meeting club members share some tasty snacks, tea, or wine, spending some time
catching up on news about members and neighbors and town activities. At each meeting,
members usually discuss budget status, fund raising opportunities, and updates
on upcoming Women’s Club events. New members are always welcome – it’s a great
way to get to know your neighbors and get connected with other women in town.
Some interesting aspect of Town history or amusing local lore is always brought
up.
The club sponsors the
Progressive Dinner, the Attic in the Street sale, the Christmas Sing Along, the
New Year's Day reception, and a variety of other functions like the Writer's
Workshop Reading and the Octogenarian Celebration. News about these events and
upcoming meetings of the membership appear in the Bugle and are usually posted
at the bulletin board at
Penn
Place.
The Women's Club was founded in 1913 as the Civic Study Club, by Mrs. J.
Ross Thompson (11018
Kenilworth), who was a
strong-minded feminist and used the Club, which she ran until 1925, to induce
and prepare women to take a more active part in civic affairs. By the late
1940s the Women's Club was providing impetus, monetary donations, and labor for
the construction of the
Garrett
Park
Community
Center, later for our first-in-the-county
community swimming pool, and eventually to the updating, decorating, and
maintenance of the Town Hall. The club is currently guided by a group of
elected officers.
