GIVES

GIVES is a Garrett Park volunteer endeavor to collect money for the less fortunate here and abroad. It was started in December 1974, by Peg Winegarden and a group of people who wanted to do something about the problem of hunger. After some research, two organizations that help the hungry were chosen: Zaccheus Kitchen, which serves hot food daily to the hungry in the District of Columbia, and the American Friends Service Committee, which works to alleviate hunger and its causes throughout the world.  GIVES has raised a significant amount of money shared equally by each organization. GIVES stands for Garrett Park Intercommunity Voluntary Experiment in Sharing.

GIVES collects money in a soup pot on a card table next to the Post Office on the first Saturday of each month. Volunteers take turns at these collections. GIVES has no overhead and is a tax-exempt organization. Contributions have been made to GIVES as special gifts or memorials.  GIVES have been recognized by the State of Maryland by the award of a plaque kept in the Town Hall. As the dimensions of the problems grow, continued and increased support is urgently needed.
